Antibodies to a Brain-Type Creatine Kinase: Biomarker of Cancer-Related Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndromes
نویسنده
چکیده
The primary pathological mechanism for paraneoplastic neurological syndromes is believed to be a form of onconeural immunity where the cancer causes a cross-immune reaction with the neurons. In a previous study, using a proteomic approach, we detected an anti-brain-type creatine kinase antibody that was associated with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. Using immunohistochemistry, we showed that this antibody reacted with both mouse and human cerebellar neurons, as well as bladder cancer cells, small cell lung cancer cells, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma tissues. In the current study, this antibody was detected in sera from two paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration patients with small cell lung cancer and one lymphoma patient in whom the sensory-motor neuropathy manifested as paraneoplastic neurological syndrome. In total, we detected five patients with paraneoplastic neurological syndrome. In the previous studies, as far as we could find, five out of six paraneoplastic neurological syndrome patients who tested negative for well-characterized onconeural antibodies were positive for anti-brain-type creatine kinase antibodies. It is high frequency. Taking into account these findings, brain-type creatine kinase may be a good candidate as an onconeural antigen for many cancers. Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes associated with anti-brain-type creatine kinase autoantibody may be the cause of some predominant cancers, which is similar in other well-characterized onconeural antibodies. However, it is necessary to perform further epidemiological analysis to confirm the presence of anti-brain-type creatine kinase antibody before it can be considered as a useful marker of PNS in the clinical setting.

Antiamphiphysin antibodies are associated with various paraneoplastic neurological syndromes and tumors.
BACKGROUND Antiamphiphysin antibodies react with a 128-kd protein found in synaptic vesicles. They were first described in patients with paraneoplastic stiff-man syndrome and breast cancer, but studies suggest that they can also occur in patients with other tumors and neurological disorders. OBJECTIVE To determine if antiamphiphysin antibodies are associated with various paraneoplastic neurol...

OBJECTIVE Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) were initially defined as neurological syndromes with unknown etiology that often associate with cancer. This broad definition may lead to misconception that any neurological syndrome, which coincides with a cancer might be considered as PNS. In the last two decades it has been suggested that PNSs are mainly immune-mediated. The detection of...
متن کاملMa1, a novel neuron- and testis-specific protein, is recognized by the serum of patients with paraneoplastic neurological disorders.
The identification of antineuronal antibodies has facilitated the diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurological disorders and the early detection of the associated tumours. It has also led to the cloning of possibly important neuron-specific proteins. In this study we wanted to identify novel antineuronal antibodies in the sera of patients with paraneoplastic neurological disorders and to clone the ...

Several cancers, especially lung, ovarian and breast, can cause paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. The presence of different antineuronal antibodies associated with different cancers and paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration suggests that several immunological mechanisms may result in the same neurological disorder. In patients with small-cell lung cancer, paraneoplastic cerebellar degene...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Adult dermatomyositis presents as a paraneoplastic syndrome in up to 25% of cases, but no clinical, histologic, or laboratory markers completely specific for paraneoplastic disease in dermatomyositis have been identified to date. Furthermore, studies on adult dermatomyositis do not usually report the frequency of cutaneous features of dermatomyositis in patients with...
